Etanya Empowerment Services NPO have been implementing community and schools-based programmes for the past 4x years in Gauteng (Ekurhuleni) and in Free State (Bethlehem). With minimal funding the organisation has been able to have successful programmes through partnering with local municipalities, key stakeholders and communities. The following are the projects that we have implemented:
Etanya has been implementing this programe at eTwatwa an informal settlement in Ekurhuleni East and in Maluti -A-Phofung Municiplaity. The overall objective of this programme is to ensure that children are safe. It focuses on children ages 8-13 years old by providing children with homework support afterschool. This need was identified by one of our volunteers as she observed that most parents come home late and when children come home there is no proper supervision. As a result, there is no one supporting them with homework and number end up playing on the street making them vulnerable to abuse. In this project we also conduct Life -skills education using edutainment approach to reinforce positive behaviour. Through this programme we have supported over 200 children.
During school holiday we also have a holiday programme where children come and have different activities to keep them busy and safe during school holidays. We get support from local retail supermarkets who provide groceries for the children to have cooked meal. We have trained out of school youth in the communities to run fun and educational activities with the children. These include drama, music and Life skills programme. We also partner with other organisation such as Sci -bono to do career guidance sessions, self-defence lessons, dance etc. Through our holiday programme we have reached more than 500 children.
During Covid 19 lockdown Etanya continued to support this community partnering with local retail supermarkets and supported 300 families with food parcels for over 18 months. This was very crucial as most children who would have received a meal at school were not attending school regularly and this intervention closed that gap.
Access to Social Services Grant
We identified a need that most community members who were illegible to receiving grants were not able to do so. In this assist community members to apply for child support grant, foster care and older person grant. We assist them to get all the documents required to apply. We work closely with municipality this service by conducting community meetings and coordinate with local SAPS, Department of Home affairs and department of social development. More than 100 families have been able to get the child support grant, 10 foster care grant and 16 old person pension through our intervention.
